A large protest, organised by the People’s Struggle Movement, trade unions, mass organisations and political activists, began at noon today (4 November 2026) near Parliament at Polduwa Junction. Protesters called on the government to withdraw the repressive PSTA and OCA bills it seeks to pass. Their slogans included: “Tear up the state-terrorist PSTA–PTA Acts!” and “Tear up the OCA that criminalises the people!”

Speaking to the media at the protest, Wasantha Mudalige, a member of the People’s Struggle Movement’s National Executive Council, said:

“We have come to Parliament today to raise the people’s concerns. We know that neither the government nor the opposition cares about the challenges they face. As usual, they are bickering among themselves to strengthen their positions.”

“Meanwhile, the people have been taxed to the hilt and pushed from the frying pan into the fire. The government is also preparing to pass anti-people, repressive bills such as the PSTA and OCA. These laws would label ordinary people as terrorists and criminals. They are being introduced to give even more power to a police force that beats people until their heads are split open in broad daylight and breaks the backs of young people in custody. The NPP government, led by Anura Dissanayake, came to power promising the people a prosperous country. What it is doing now is utterly shameful.”

“If these bills are passed, the executive will be able to brand anyone who opposes them a terrorist and imprison them. The police will be able to fabricate any charge and imprison innocent young people in villages. We ask the government: Did the people give you a mandate to do this?”

“The people gave this government power after defeating corrupt political gangs that had stolen public money for decades. They hoped it would solve their problems. But within two years, the government has turned its back on the people’s mandate and is dancing to the IMF’s and the United States’ tune. A handful of billionaires are advising the government, and it is doing what they tell it to do.”

“The repressive laws that Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Rajapaksas were forced to withdraw in the face of public opposition are now being passed, one after another, by this government under the NPP label. The opposition does not seem to care, as it has no fundamental policy disagreement with the government’s actions. As the saying goes, ‘The jungle may change, but the leopard’s spots do not.’ The government and opposition are pursuing the same policies. That is why both try to bury genuine public opposition beneath media spectacles and manufactured controversies. In reality, the government and opposition are jointly committing organised crime against the people.”

“The government taxes people’s food, their children’s books and even their medicines. It is the government that is committing acts of terror against the people. The police kill people on the streets. That is what real terrorism looks like.”

“We must build people’s power against this state terrorism. The people’s voice is not represented in Parliament today. That is why the People’s Struggle Movement has taken their voice to the streets, as it has before. If the government thinks it can use its two-thirds majority to pass repressive laws and do whatever it wants in this country, it is dreaming. The Rajapaksas and others who thought the same way were eventually forced to back down and leave.”

“So we tell the government: withdraw the anti-people bills immediately, including the PTA, PSTA and OCA. If you act in Parliament against the people’s will, we will build a massive people’s movement in the streets. We will mobilise against state terrorism and the predatory economy that burdens the people while appeasing billionaires. We will turn your policies upside down. We have come to Parliament today to deliver that message to the government.”
