On 2 December, 12 prisoners were reported to have been killed and more than 100 injured after the tensions arose in the aftermath of detainees in the Mahara Prison demanding that Covid-19-positive detainees be separated. The tragic events of Mahara prison are a consequence of the failure of the Sri Lankan government to effectively address the situation of prison conditions.
The brutal killing of detainees who are supposed to be protected by the government is a serious violation of fundamental rights where We are same kind of incident was taken place at the Welikada prison a few years ago, although 28 detainees were shot to death, there has been no impartial inquiry to-date.
FLSP raised its condemnation on 6th December 2020 by orgaizing a public protest agsint these brutal killings of the government which leads the country towards uncivilized killing field.
