නිදහස් අධ්‍යාපනය හා මිලිටරිකරණයට එරෙහි විරෝධතා දැක්වූවන් පසුපස පොලිස් දඩයමක්!.
අධ්‍යාපනට පෞද්ගලිකකරණයට සහ මිලිටරිකරණයට එරෙහිව සටන් වදින ශිෂ්‍ය නායකයන්, වෘත්තීය සමිති නායකයන් සහ දේශපාලන ක්‍රියාකාරිකයන් අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීමෙන් පසු, තවත් පිරිසක් දඩයම් කිරීමේ මර්දනකාරී මෙහෙයුමක් ක්‍රියාත්මක වෙමින් තිබේ.
අගෝස්තු 03 වැනිදා ‘නිදහස් අධ්‍යාපනය උදෙසා සිසුජන ව්‍යාපාරය’ විසින් සංවිධානය කළ විරෝධතාවක් අවසන්ව නිවෙස් බලා යද්දී අත්අඩංගුවට ගෙන බන්ධනාගාර ගත කර සිටින සිසු ජන ව්‍යාපාරයේ කෝෂිලා හංසමාලී පෙරේරා සහ පෙරටුගාමී සමාජවාදී පක්ෂයේ චමීර කොස්වත්ත තවදුරටත් රිමාන්ඩ් බන්ධනාගාරයේ පසුවෙති. නිදහස් අධ්‍යාපනය උදෙසා සිසුජන ව්‍යාපාරයේ ප්‍රධාන පාර්ශ්වකරුවකු වන අන්තර් විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයීය ශිෂ්‍ය බලමණ්ඩලයේ කැඳවුම්කරු වසන්ත මුදලිගේ, අධ්‍යාපන ගැටලු සම්බන්ධයෙන් වූ රූපවාහිනී වැඩසටහනකට සම්බන්ධ වී නවාතැන් බලා යමින් සිටියදී පාන්දර 3.30 ට පමණ බොරුපන ප්‍රදේශයේදී ඔහු ගමන් ගත් රථය නවතා තිබුණේ සිවිල් ඇදුමින් සැරසුනු පිරිසකි. අනතුරුව ඔහුගේ විරෝධය මැද අත්අඩංගුවට ගනු ලැබුවේ නිල ඇඳුමින් පැමිණි පොලිස් නිලධාරියකුගේ සහාය ලබා ගෙනය.
මේ වනවිට, පොලිසිය විසින් තවත් දේශපාලන ක්‍රියාකාරිකයන්, වෘත්තිය සමිති නායකයන් හා ශිෂ්‍ය ක්‍රියාකාරිකයන් පිරිසකගේ නම් ලැයිස්තු සූදානම් කරගෙන අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීමට බලවත් උත්සාහයක් පොලිසිය විසින් ගෙන යමින් පවතී. සිවිල් ඇඳුමින් සැරසුණු ආරක්ෂක ඔත්තුකරුවන් හා පොලිස් නිලධාරින් විසින් ඇතැම් අයගේ නිවෙස්වලට ගොස් ඥාතීන් හෝ අසල්වාසින් ප්‍රශ්න කරමින් බියවැද්දීමේ නිරතව සිටින බව වාර්තා වේ.
පාර්ලිමේන්තුව අසළ විරෝධතාවට එක්වූවන් දඩයම
අගෝස්තු 3වැනිදා විරෝධතාවට සහභාගිවූවන් මෙන්ම එසේ විරෝධතාවන්ට කිසිදු සම්බන්ධයක් නැති දේශපාලන ක්‍රියාධරයන්ද තවදුරටත් අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීමට ලුහුබඳින අතර සිටින බවද අවධානයට ගත යුතුව ඇත. අත්අඩංගුවට පත්වීමේ අභියෝගයට මුහුණ දෙමින්ම අන්තර් විශ්ව විද්‍යාල ශිෂ්‍ය බල මණ්ඩලයේ ක්‍රියාකාරින් විසින් මෙම මර්දන තත්වය සම්බන්ධ සකස්කර ඇති තොරතුරු වාර්තාවකින් මෙකී දඩයම පිළිබඳ කරුණු හෙළි වේ.
එසේ තවදුරටත් අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීම සඳහා මෙහෙයුම් දියත් කොට තිබුණු ක්‍රියාකාරින් වන්නේ අ.වි. ශි බ. මණ්ඩලයේ වැඩ බලන කැඳවුම්කරු ගල්වැව සිරිධම්ම හිමි, අ.වි.ශි.බ.ම ක්‍රියාකාරික අමිල සන්දීප, ලංකා බැංකු සේවක සංගමයේ ධනුෂ්ක, ලංකා වතුසේවක සංගමයේ චතුර සමරසිංහ, ඒකාබද්ධ සෞඛ්‍ය සේවා සංගමයේ ටැම්පිටියේ සුගතානන්ද හිමි, ඒකාබද්ධ රැකියා විරහිත උපාධිධාරි සංගමයේ තැන්නේ ඥාණානන්ද හිමි සහ විවෘත විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයේ සේවය කරන මහාචාර්ය මහිම් මෙන්ඩිස් ය. පොලීසිය අධිකරණය හමුවට කරුණු දක්වමින් වැඩිදුර පරික්ෂණ සඳහා අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීමට අවශ්‍ය පුද්ගලයන් ලෙස හඳුන්වමින් පොලිසිය විසින් අධිකරණය හමුවට ඉදිරිපත් කළ පුද්ගලයන් 13 දෙනෙකුගේ නාම ලේඛනයේ ඔවුන්ගේ නම් ඇතුළත්කර තිබේ.
කොතලාවල ජාතික ආරක්ෂක විශ්ව විද්‍යාල පනත් කෙටුම්පතට එරෙහිව අගෝස්තු 3වැනිදා පාර්ලිමේන්තු සංකීර්ණය ආසන්නයේ පැවති සිසු විරෝධතාවයෙන් අනතුරුව මෙම අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීම් සහ ලුහුබැඳීම් ආරම්භ වූ අතර, උද්ඝෝෂණය අවසන්ව පැය කිහිපයක් ගෙවී යාමටත් මත්තෙන් පොලීසිය සහ සිවිල් කණඩායම් විසින් ශිෂ්‍ය ක්‍රියාකාරින් සොයමින් ඔවුන්ගේ නිවෙස් වෙත යෑමටත්, මහමග රැක සිට පැහැරගෙන යාමටත් පටන් ගැණුනි.
පොලීසිය සහ හඳුනා නොගත් කණ්ඩායම්වල ලුහුබැඳීමට ගොදුරුව සිටින වැඩි පිරිසක් විශ්ව විද්‍යාල සිසුන් වන අතර සෙසු අය වෘත්තීය සමිති හා දේශපාලන ක්‍රියාකාරීන් බව අනාවරණය වේ. මේ අතර, විශ්ව විද්‍යාල ආචාර්යවරුන් දෙනෙකු රාජ්‍ය මර්දනයේ ඉලක්ක බවට පත්ව ඇති බව අනාවරණය වී ඇත. අ.වි.ශි.බ.ම. නියෝජිතයන් විසින් කොළඹ පිහිටි තානාපති කාර්යාල වෙත භාර දුන් මෙම මර්දන තත්ව වාර්තාවේ ප්‍රකාශ වන අන්දමට අධ්‍යාපනය මිලිටරිකරණයට එරෙහි ව හඩ නැගීම නිසා විශ්ව විද්‍යාල ආචාර්ය සමිති සම්මේලනයේ මාධ්‍ය ප්‍රකාශකයකුව සිටි මේ වන විට විවෘත විශ්වවිද්‍යාල මහාචාර්යවරයකුවන මහිම් මෙන්ඩිස් සහ ශ්‍රී ජයවර්ධනපුර විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයේ ආචාර්ය අමින්ද ලක්මාල් මර්දනයේ ගොදුරු බවට පත්ව ඇත.
විශ්වවිද්‍යාල ආචාර්යවරුන්ගේ විරෝධතා මර්දනය කිරීම
අගොස්තු 5 වැනිදා විශ්වවිද්‍යාල ආචාර්යවරු විසින් කොළඹ නගරයේ කැඳවා තිබුණු මිලිටරිකරණයට විරෝධය පෑමේ උද්ගෝෂණයකට සහභාගි වීමට යමින් සිටි ජයවර්ධනපුර විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ මහා ශිෂ්‍ය සංගම් සභාපති අමිල සන්දීප ශිෂ්‍යයා විශ්වවිද්‍යාලය අසළදීම කිසියම් පිරිසක් විසින් බලහත්කාරයෙන් වාහනයකට දමා ගෙන පැහැර ගෙන යන ලදී. මෙම සිදුවීම සම්බන්ධ ලැබුණු තොරතුරකට අනුව, ශිෂ්‍ය සංගමයේ නියෝජිතයන් අදාළ වන පොලිස් බල ප්‍රදේශය සලකමින් මිරිහාන පොලිසිය වෙත ගියද ඔහු අත්අඩංගුවේ පසුවන අයකු නොවන බව ප්‍රකාශ කර ඇත. විරෝධතාව පැවති පොලිස් බල ප්‍රදේශය අනුව, තලංගම පොලිසියෙන් විමසීමක් කළද ඔවුන්ද දන්වා ඇත්තේ තමන් විසින් ඔහු අත්අඩංගුවට ගෙන නැති බවය. කෙසේවෙතත් පසුදින ඔහු කඩුවෙල මහෙස්ත්‍රාත් අධිකරණය වෙත ඉදිරිපත් කිරීමට තලංගම පොලිසිය කටයුතු කර තිබිණි.
ලිප්ටන් වට රවුමේ පැවති විරෝධතාවට සම්බන්ධ වී නැවත පැමිණෙමින් තිබූණු ආචාර්යවරුන් සහ සිසුන් රැගත් බස් රථය මග නවතා සිවිල් ඇඳුමින් සැරසුණු පිරිසක් බස් රථයට බලහත්කාරයෙන් ඇතුල් වී ජයවර්ධනපුර විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයේ ආචාර්ය අමින්ද ලක්මාල්, බලහත්කාරයෙන් කැඳවා ගෙන යාමට සුදානම් වූහ. එයට විරෝධයක් එල්ල වීමත් සමග ඔවුන් පුද්ගලයෙකු අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීමට සෝදිසි කරන බව පවසමින් බස් රථය පරීක්ෂා කරනු ලැබීය. මෙසේ සිවිල් ඇඳුමින් පැමිනි පුද්ගලයා අනන්‍යතාව හෙළිකිරීමට එකඟ වී නැති අතර පසුව හඳුනාගෙන ඇති ආකාරයට ඔහු මිරිහාන පොලිසියේ නිලධාරියෙකි.
එම විශ්ව විද්‍යාල ආචාර්යවරුන්ගේ විරෝධතාවට සම්බන්ධ වීමට පැමිණි කැලණිය විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ දෙවන වසර ශිෂ්‍යයකු අත්අඩංගුවට ගනු ලැබීය. මීට අමතරව, තලංගම පොලීසිය විසින් අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීම සඳහා ඉලක්කකර ඇති ශිෂ්‍ය නායකයන් අතර උදාර සඳරුවන් සහ ඉන්දික විදානපතිරණද සිටී.
ශිෂ්‍ය නායකයන් හා දේශපාලන ක්‍රියාකාරින් ඉලක්ක කිරීම
විරෝධතාවලට සහභාගි වූ කම්කරු නායකයන්, ශිෂ්‍ය නායකයන් සහ පෙරටුගාමී සමාජවාදී පක්ෂයේ මධ්‍යම කාරක සභිකයන් දඩයම් කිරීමක් ද පොලිසිය විසින් ආරම්භ කර තිබේ. අගෝස්තු 3 වැනිදා විරෝධතාවට එක් ව සිටි සුජිත් කුරුවිට ලුහුබැඳීමට පොලිසිය පියවර ගෙන ඇත. කෙසේවෙතත්, පෙ.ස.ප. මධ්‍යම කාරක සභිකයකු වන රවින්ද්‍ර මුදලිගේ මෙම විරෝධතා ව්‍යාපාරයට සහභාගි වූ අයකු නොවන අතර අගෝස්තු 5 වැනිදා රාත්‍රියේ ඔහුගේ නිවසට කිසිදු අධිකරණ නියෝගයක් නැතිව, බලහත්කාරයෙන් ඇතුළු වූ පොලිස් නිල ඇඳුමින් සැරසුණු දෙදෙනෙක් හා සිවිල් ඇඳුමින් සැරසුණු පිරිසක් නිවැසියන්ට තර්ජනය කර තිබේ. වඩාත් බරපතළ කාරණය වන්නේ ඔහුගේ මව්පියන්ගේ නිවසටද මෙසේ පොලිසිය කඩා පැන තිබීමය.
රාජාංගනය ප්‍රදේශයේ සැරිසරමින් විශ්වවිද්‍යාල සිසුන් ජීවත්වන නිවෙස්වල ශිෂ්‍ය ක්‍රියාකාරිකයකු සෙවීමට පොලිසිය උත්සාහ කර ඇත. පසුව අනාවරණය වූ ආකාරයට පෑලියගොඩ සහ රාජංගණය පොලිස් ස්ථානවල 20 දෙනෙකුගෙන් පමණ යුත් නිලධාරින් කණ්ඩායමක් අගෝස්තු 3, 4, 5 , 6 සහ 8 යන දිනයන්වල දිවා රෑ කිහිපවරක්ම මෙම ප්‍රදේශයේ සැරිසරා ඇත්තේ උදාර සඳරුවන් ශිෂ්‍යයා සෙවීම පිණිසය. අගොස්තු 6වැනිදා පෑලියගොඩ පොලිසියේ බව කියමින් ඔහුගේ නිවසට පැමිණි නිලධාරින් ශිෂ්‍යයා නිවසේ නොමැති බැවින් වහාම ඔහු තමන් වෙත භාර දෙන ලෙසත් තමන් ආපසු එන බවත් තමන්ගෙන් මිදීමට උත්සාහ නොකරන ලෙසත් නිවැසියන්ට තර්ජනාත්මකව පවසා ඇත. පොලීසිය මෙසේ ඉලක්ක සහගතව සිසුන් සහ වෘත්තීය සමිති ක්‍රියාකාරින්ව අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීම සඳහා ඔවුන්ගේ නිවෙස් වෙත ගොස් ඇත්තේ රාත්‍රි කාලයේදීවීම විශේෂයෙන් අවධානයට ලක්වන කරුණකි.

ඒකාබද්ධ ගුරුසේවා සංගමයේ අමිල සඳරුවන් අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීමේ අරමුණින් අගෝස්තු 5 වැනිදා සෙවණගල ඔහුගේ නිවසට ගිය පොලිස් කණ්ඩායමට පෑලියගොඩ පොලිසියේ අපරාධ අංශයේ නිලධාරින් 6දෙනකු සමග සෙවනගල පොලීසියේ නිලධාරින් දෙනෙකු සහභාගි වී ඇත. එහිදී ඔහුගේ පියා අත්අඩංගුවට ගන්නා බවට තර්ජනය කර ඇති අතර ඥාතීන් සම්බන්ධ විස්තර පවසමින් ඔවුන්ගේ දුරකථන අංක ලබා දෙන ලෙස බලපෑම් සිදු කර ඇත. අමිල සඳරුවන් සේවය කරන කොළඹ මහානාම විදුහලේ විදුහල්පති, නියෝජ්‍ය විදුහල්පති හා සහකාර විදුහල්පති අමතා පොලිසිය යැයි පවසමින් ඔහු සිටින ස්ථානය සම්බන්ධ තොරතුරු ලබා දෙන ලෙස බලපෑම් සිදු කර ඇත.

විරෝධතාවලට සේවා සපයන්නන් ලුහුබැඳීම
අගෝස්තු 9 වන දින මහනුවර ප්‍රභාත් ජයසිංහ නැමැති අයෙකුවද පොලිසිය විසින් අත්අඩංගුවට ගත් බව වාර්තා වේ. අගොස්තු 3 වනදා පැවති උද්ඝෝෂණයට ප්‍රවාහන කටයුතුවල යෙදී ඇති වෑන් රථ රියදුරන් තිදෙනෙකු පසුව පොලිසිය විසින් අත්අඩංගුවට ගනු ලැබීය. මැදිරිගිරියේ පදිංචි ජයන්ත උපුල් කුමාර, තිස්සමහාරාමේ රංජිත් අමල් සහ ගම්පල පදිංචි නිලවීර වීරතුංග මෙසේ අත්අඩංගුවට ගෙන තිබිණි. මෙම විරෝධතාවට ශබ්ද විකාශන යන්ත්‍ර සැපයු සේවා ආයතන හිමිකරුවන් අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීම සඳහා පොලිස් කණ්ඩායම් කිහිපයක්ම නිරන්තරව උත්සාහ දරා ඇත.
තලංගම, මිරිහාන, පෑලියගොඩ සහ වැලිකඩ යන පොලිස්ථානයන්වල නිලධාරින් විසින් අන්තර් විශ්ව විද්‍යාල ශිෂ්‍ය බල මණ්ඩලයේ ක්‍රියාකාරින් දඩයම් කිරීමක නිරතවී සිටන බව ඔවුන් විසින් සකස් කොට ඇති වාර්තාවෙන් අනාවරණය වේ. මීට අමතරව, පාර්ලිමේන්තුව අසළ විරෝධතාවට සහභාගිවූ දේශපාලන ක්‍රියාකාරිකයන් හා වෘත්තීය සමිති ක්‍රියාකාරින්ව අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීම සඳහා පොලිස් දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව ගෙන යන දඩයම් මෙහෙයුම්වලට ඔවුන් පදිංචිව සිටින ප්‍රදේශවල පොලිස් ස්ථානවලට නිලධාරීන් යොදවා ඇත.

Wasantha Mudalige, the convener of the Inter-University Students Federation, a leading activist in the Movement for the Free Education, was the next target of state suppression. He was on his way home after a TV program on an educational program when a group of plainclothes men stopped the vehicle. He was travelling at Borupana, Ratmalana, around 3.30 in the morning of the 6th. He was later arrested amid his protest, with the help of a uniformed police officer. Currently, the police are making a concerted effort to arrest lists of other political activists, trade union leaders and student activists. It is reported that security personnel in civilian clothes and police officers are engaged in intimidation of relatives or neighbours.
Hunting Continues to Arrest Participants of Protest
Political and trade union activists who took part in the August 3 protests and those with nothing to do with the protests are being pursued further arrest. The Inter-University Student Federation (IUSF), withstanding the arrest challenge on its activists, has released a report with detailed information on the crackdown. ‘The Report on Abductions, Imprisonment and Intimidation of Activists Involved in Peaceful Protests’ released to media was also handed over to the foreign embassies in Colombo by a student delegation.
The hunting operations to make further arrests activists earmarked were Inter-University Students Federation’s Acting Convener Galwewa Siridhamma Thero, IUSF Activist Amila Sandeepa, Danushka of Ceylon Bank Employees Union, Chathura Samarasinghe of Ceylon Estate Employees Union, Tampitiye Sugathananda Thero of Joint Health Services Union, Thanne Gnananada Thero of Combined Association of Unemployed Graduates, and the Open University Professor Mahim Mendis. They were among the 13 individuals that the Talangama Police have produced at the courts as they wanted to be arrested for further investigations. The arrests and stalks began after the protest the Kothalawala National Defense University Bill. A few hours after the protest ended, police and civilian groups stormed the homes of student activists and searched the streets.
It is revealed that most of the victims of the pursuit by the police and unidentified groups are university students and the rest are trade unionists and political activists. Meanwhile, it has been revealed that two university lecturers have become targets of state repression. Mahim Mendis, a professor at Open University, and a media spokesman for the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA), Aminda Lakmal, a lecturer at Sri Jayewardenepura University, has spoken out strongly against the militarization of education.
Suppression of Protests by University Teachers
Amila Sandeepa, the President of the Jayewardenepura University Student Council, was abducted by a group forced into a van near the university on August 5 while protesting the militarization that convened university teachers. Having heard of the incident, the student union representatives went to the Mirihana police station, considering the relevant police area, but told that he was not in custody. Then they went to Talangama police station since it is the location where the protest took place, but police informed them that the student leader was not arrested. However, the next day he was produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court by none other than the Thalangama Police.
A group of lecturers and students who participated in the protest the militarization at the Lipton Circus, Colombo, were on their way back when a group of civilian clothes were forcibly entered into the bus and attempted to take away Aminda Lakmal, a lecturer at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. When the students on the bus protested, they retreated, explaining that they were looking for some other person. The man in plainclothes had not agreed to reveal his identity and was later identified as a Mirihana police officer.
A second-year student at the University of Kelaniya who joined the protest of the university teachers was also arrested. Meanwhile, Udara Sandaruwan and Indika Vidanapathirana are among the student leaders targeted for arrest by the Thalangama Police.
Targeting Student Leaders and Political Activists
The police are also hunting the leaders of trade unions and student movements and the central committee members of the Frontline Socialist Party. Police unsuccessfully stormed into the residence of Sujith Kuruwita, a central committee member of FLSP, to arrest him since he participated in the rally on August 3. However, Ravindra Mudalige, another central committee member being hunted, was not participating in the protest. What is more serious is that the police had also stormed into the house of his parents.
Police have been patrolling the Rajanganaya area in search of a student activist intruding on the homes of university students. Later revealed that a team of about 20 officers from the Peliyagoda and Rajanganaya police stations had been patrolling the area several days and nights on August 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 in search of Udara Sandaruwan. Officers who came to his house on August 6 claiming to be from the Peliyagoda police station had threatened the student’s family members that there would be consequences unless he would not surrender. They have also warned that they would return and not to try to make any ‘mistake’. It is noteworthy that the police went to students’ homes and trade union activists at night to arrest them.
Plainclothes officers in Action and Threatening of Residents
Meanwhile, the report prepared by the Inter-University Student Federation (IUSF) has revealed the details of the police operations to hunt down those who took part in the August 3 protest near the Parliament complex, which was convened with the participation of the Mass Movement for Free Education and other civil organizations.
Accordingly, on August 4, an unidentified group in plain clothes went to Dhammika Munasinghe of the Joint Development Officers’ Association in Matara, interrogated his wife at length, and searched the house without any court order. On the same day, a plainclothes police team searched for Chathura Samarasinghe of the Estate Services Union to the union office in Colombo and to a friend’s house to search for him. Attempts have also been made to arrest Chathura by going to his office in Matugama Cloud Estate and his house in Kalawana that night. The next day, a police team came to one of Chathura’s cousin’s residences, claiming that he was hiding in the place.
In another instance, a group of five plainclothes police officers had gone to Morawaka on August 5 to arrest Indika Vidanapathirana, the secretary of the Ruhuna University Student Council, at his residence. The group could not catch Indika and threatened those in the house to hand Indika to the police immediately.
Six officers pursued Amila Sandaruwan of the Joint Teacher Services Union from the Sevanagala Police and six officers from the Peliyagoda Police Crime Branch who went to his house in Sevanagala on August 5. Amila’s father was threatened to be arrested and pressured to provide details about the relatives with phone numbers. The principal, deputy principal and assistant principal of Mahanama Vidyalaya, Colombo, where Amila Sandaruwan serves as a teacher, have been contacted by the police claiming to be police and have been pressured to provide information regarding his whereabouts.
Heshan Harshana, a student of Rajarata University, was arrested by the Thalangama Police on the evening of August 13.
Pursuit of those who Assisted the Protests
It is reported that the police also arrested a person named Prabath Jayasinghe on August 9. The police have arrested three van drivers after the protest campaign held on the 3rd. Jayantha Upul Kumara, a resident of Medirigiriya, Ranjith Amal, a resident of Tissamaharama and Nilaweera Weeratunga, a resident of Gampola, were arrested. Several police teams have continuously tried to locate and arrest the sound technicians served at this protest.
According to a report prepared by them, officers from Talangama, Mirihana, Peliyagoda and Welikada police stations are actively hunting down the Inter-University Students Federation. In addition, police in this crackdown on political activists and trade unionists who took part in protests near parliament have deployed officers belong to police stations in areas where the activists live. Judges have warned the police against disregarding the constitutional right of citizens to free expression and the right to protest on several occasions when protesters have been arrested and produced in court. The Colombo Magistrate’s Court had strongly warned the police not to bring the protesters before the court under the Quarantine Act or any other irrelevant charges unless allegations of any wrongdoing are applicable. Many lawyers at the courts are standing by for the rights of the protesters brought before the courts. This action by the lawyers, seen as a challenge to the arbitrary repressive measures taken by the police.
However, it is indisputable that the police are being led to administer these repressive measures by the ruling clan, which is trying to suppress protests that hinder its privatization of education by way of militarization. Like former regimes, Gotabhaya Rajapaksha’s government is acting without any regard to the people’s right to free education by taking steps forward to make education a commodity and thereby paving the way to attract the contribution of investors to surpass the economic crisis.
